A parody video made for a college fest at IIT Madras has gone viral for all the best reasons. The video, titled ‘Be Our Pondati’ (Pondati is Tamil word for wife), is a sarcastic play on the typical stereotypes regarding wives and daughters-in-law prevalent in the Indian society.

Based on the tunes of popular song ‘Call me maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen, the video shows a typical Indian mother looking for a “tall, thin, and fair” daughter-in-law who can meet her stereotypical demands like making perfect chapattis and producing grandchildren very soon.
Asmita Ghosh, Anukripa Elango, and Krupa Varghese, the final-year students who were the masterminds behind this video, created it for a simple contest and had never imagined the amount of publicity and recognition it has received. The three students uploaded the video on YouTube and have now over 200,000 views.
