There’s a significant showdown looming in the Maheswaram constituency. The Congress party, which was deliberating on its choice of candidate to challenge Minister Sabita Reddy, has abruptly altered its strategy. Congress leadership has decided to field a prominent leader, someone new to the electoral scene, against Minister Sabita Indra Reddy, who holds considerable influence in the BRS region.
Former MLA Kitchennagari Lakshmareddy (KLR) has been chosen to contest against Minister Sabita Indra Reddy, who, after initially winning with the Congress, later joined the ruling BRS party and became a cabinet member. The Congress has been keen on pitting a formidable candidate against Sabita Reddy from the outset, and it appears that KLR is their favored choice.
In light of this decision, the party leadership expedited KLR’s visit to Delhi on Thursday. This move sets the stage for a fierce contest, reigniting a battle between these two prominent leaders after 23 years. Previously, KLR contested against the late former Home Minister Indra Reddy and Sabita Reddy, marking a long-standing political rivalry between them.
Following the demise of her husband, Indra Reddy, Sabita Reddy contested as a Chevella Congress candidate in the Chevella Assembly by-election. In the 2000 Chevella by-election, KLR ran as a TDP candidate against Sabita Reddy and was defeated. Now, after 23 years, an intriguing electoral battle is set to unfold between the two once again.
Notably, KLR had been seeking the Tandoor constituency ticket for several months. Consequently, the party approached him to contest from either Maheswaram or Rajendranagar. Initially hesitant, KLR was eventually convinced to enter the electoral arena from Maheswaram during discussions with Congress leadership ahead of the second list of candidates’ release.
