What Is the Film About?
Vinay, a youngster, dies under suspicious circumstances. Vasudev (Sumanth) takes up the case and unearths the real truth.
While the basic story is about finding out how Vinay died, the plot focuses on the circumstances which led to the death. The events being tied to the Karma Theory make up the overall story.
Performances
Sumanth is ideal for the part, playing a sincere police officer seeking the truth. The actor goes about the proceedings with a calm and subtle demeanour. He offers just enough intensity to make things gripping as the narrative rests entirely on his shoulders.
Analysis
Rahul writes and directs Newton’s Third Law. It is a murder-mystery investigative thriller, focusing on the events leading to the death and its aftermath rather than the actual murder.
The movie opens on an intriguing note as it should be for a thriller. It hooks one to see how things will unfold next. Keeping the genre in mind, things look fine until the end of the first block.
However, one can also see that the execution is flat. Many situations offer scope to thrill, but they seem to pass by normally. Take, for example, the entire interval stretch, barring the actual end.
Also, the decision to open up the world after all the investigation setup and bring a key segment into these portions doesn’t yield the desired result. The limited location also leads to a repetitiveness setting in.
Still, with many unanswered questions, one looks forward to seeing what comes next post-intermission.
Compared with the first half, the second half has better material to take the story forward. There are many threads woven into the narrative without the whole thing looking overdone.
The choices made by the key characters also tie well with the core emotional thread. It all looks fine on paper, and makes one engaged in the proceedings as well.
However, the engagement with the narrative remains at surface level only. The execution is the fault here. As with the first half, the flatness and smallness of the whole thing doesn’t let the proceedings rise to the next level.
The multiple threads are fine and offer enough content to thrill, but they fail to deliver that experience. The narrative moves from one block to another and remains at a decent level only.
The ending, where the whole thing comes together, is another impactful block, but it lacks the wow factor. Everything just passes by at a normal level, lacking the high.
The underutilisation of some known actors, failing to deliver the critical impact in sequences with potential, is the main reason the entire movie remains at a passable level.
Overall, Newton’s 3rd Law offers an interesting premise that holds good potential. It also has the content, but the execution makes it a generic affair. If you like thrillers, the movie is a passable affair if you set the right expectations.
Performances by Other Actors
Ravi Varma, Shelley N Kumar, and Trinadh Varma, who comprise the family, are also the characters with better roles besides the hero. Shelly N Kumar and Trinadh Varma are especially good. They bring life to the drama and make one connect with their characters. Along with Ravi Varma, their act is the primary reason for one’s investment in the proceedings.
And then we have known faces like Srinivas Avasarala and Jagapathi Babu. They are not utilised well and lack impact. If their tracks had been elevated effectively, the same narrative would have had a different feel altogether. The rest of the cast has bits and pieces roles, and they are okay.
Music and Other Departments?
The songs don’t have any impact. It’s good that they are used as background to take the story forward. But the bigger disappointment is the background score considering the genre. Barring a few stretches, nothing stays with us.
The cinematography gives the proceedings a generic feel. It, along with the flat execution, makes the narrative look ordinary when there was content that could have made an impression. The editing is okay. The dialogues could have been better.
