He was made a Minister just a couple of days before the Jubilee Hills by polls. He was considered to be the minority member of the Cabinet. But now Azharuddin‘s position appears to be in a fix.
According to rules, Azharuddin must be elected as a MLA or MLC within six months. The six months will end by April ending. There is no scope for him becoming an MLA in such a short time. The ruling Congress government thought it would be simpler to elect him as an MLC. They had appealed to the past Governor regarding Azharuddin’s nomination as a MLC. That didn’t happen. Meanwhile, the Governor of Telangana changed.
Though the Supreme Court left the decision to the Governor, he didn’t approve Azharuddin’s MLC seat. Now all eyes are on the new Governor.
If the Governor does not decide the matter, the government has no option but to show the exit door to Azharuddin in the name of a Cabinet reshuffle. Already, there is demand for a lambada Minister.
But more than a reshuffle, Azharuddin’s term is a matter of prestige for the ruling party. With April approaching fast, it remains to be seen how the Revanth sarkar will squeeze out of the situation. Hurting the sentiments of the minorities could impact the party in future. Hence, Revanth Reddy must play his cards right.
