In Andhra Pradesh politics, loyalty is often celebrated in public and tested in private. The latest chatter around TDP MLA Bonda Uma and Vangaveeti Radha once again exposes this uncomfortable reality.
After the 2019 defeat, there were persistent whispers that Bonda Uma might cross over to the YSRCP. He stayed. In 2020, he and Buddha Venkanna faced a violent attack in Macherla while campaigning.
That shared experience is now being cited as proof of commitment. Yet the same incident brought little lasting political benefit to Venkanna, raising a quiet question about how selective memory works in party narratives.
The claim that caste alone can guarantee victory is equally shaky. If community identity were enough, the Vangaveeti family, long associated with Kapu politics in the region, would never have faced electoral setbacks. History shows otherwise. Voters respond to performance, accessibility and timing far more than inherited surnames.
What appears to be driving the current tension is ministerial ambition. When a sitting MLA projects excessive eagerness for a cabinet berth, it often creates friction within the party.
In this case, the perception is that Bonda Uma’s visible restlessness may inadvertently open space for other claimants, including Vangaveeti Radha. Politics rarely rewards those who appear too desperate for the next promotion.
TDP’s strength has traditionally come from organisational discipline and the ability to manage competing ambitions. Public speculation about switches, caste arithmetic and “cleared lines” only weakens that discipline.
Leaders who have stayed through difficult years deserve fair consideration, but so does the principle that no individual is bigger than the party’s collective interest.
Ultimately, both caste calculations and personal ambitions have limits.
The voters of Vijayawada Central, and the TDP high command, will decide whose loyalty and utility matter more. In the meantime, the loudest claims of commitment should be measured against actual political outcomes, not just selective memory of past attacks or defeats.
