Telangana government is planning to develop two more airports around Hyderabad — one in and around Ghatkesar and another, around Shamirpet. However the dream is now crashed as Union Civil Aviation Ministry said no new international airport can be developed within 150-km of the existing Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad’s Shamshabad area.

The Center reminded Telangana government that in terms of the Hyderabad International Airport, no international airport can be developed within 150-km for a specific period. Both the airports proposed by Telangana government, are well within a 150-km radius of RGIA and so can not be permitted.
The current International Airport has a capacity of 12 million passengers and is operating at two-thirds of its capacity. It has flexibility to expand to 40 million passengers a year. GMR – which operates the RGIA has a 30-year concession period which is till 2038. Commercial operations at the RGIA began in March 2008.
