revanth-reddy-defections

In response to the recent High Court order requiring an inquiry into the disqualification of MLAs who switched parties, the Revanth government appears to be employing strategic political maneuvers. Hours after the court’s directive, the Speaker’s Office moved quickly to appoint Serilingampally MLA Arikepudi Gandhi, who recently switched allegiance from BRS to the Congress, as the Chairman of the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

This appointment is significant because traditionally, the PAC chairmanship is granted to a member of the main opposition party, a convention that wasn’t followed here. By appointing Arikepudi Gandhi to this key position, the Speaker seems to have indicated that Gandhi is still considered a BRS member, despite his recent defection to the Congress.

The choice of Gandhi, as well as the appointment of other MLAs who also won on BRS tickets, signals the Speaker’s power to decide the status of party memberships under the legislature’s rules. This decision raises questions about how the Speaker will handle the High Court’s order on disqualification.

Although the judiciary can direct inquiries, it remains the Speaker’s prerogative under the Constitution to decide on the disqualification of MLAs, which leaves room for political discretion. This has sparked debates in political circles, as the Speaker’s decisions on such matters can significantly impact the political balance, particularly when defections and party loyalty are at stake.
