In recent times, politics in the Telugu States seems to have become unkind towards sisters. First, Jagan Mohan Reddy distanced himself from his sister Sharmila, and now KTR appears to be doing the same with Kavitha.
Sharmila parted ways with her brother long ago, joining the Congress Party to work against him. During the 2024 elections, she even played a small role in Jagan’s defeat. At one point, Jagan approached the NCLT to revoke a Gift Deed he had once given her, claiming that the bond between them had faded.
Similarly, Kavitha has been functioning independently under her Telangana Jagruthi banner, moving away from KTR’s leadership. On Raksha Bandhan this year, neither Sharmila nor Kavitha tied a rakhi to their brothers. Instead, both turned to X to post messages to their supporters rather than their own siblings. Jagan wished his “Akka Chellemmalu” online, while KTR chose not to address the festival at all.
Sharmila once stood firmly by Jagan when he was in jail, leading a padayatra and campaigning for the YSR Congress. However, after coming to power, Jagan reportedly refused to acknowledge her contribution and even attempted to deny her rightful share in their father’s property. Many felt her anger was justified, and some believe this rift cost Jagan politically in 2024.
The exact reason for the strain between KTR and Kavitha remains unclear, but she has long been politically active and contributed to the Telangana Agitation. She believes she deserves a meaningful role in the party and her share of recognition. Meanwhile, rumours suggest that KTR is urging KCR to take disciplinary action against her, adding another layer to the sibling discord in state politics.
