Supreme Court Opens Sabrimala Doors For Women

Supreme Court Opens Sabrimala Doors For WomenA Five-Judge Supreme Court Bench has batted for Gender Equality in Sabarimala Case. The Court in 4:1 Majority went on to say that the Shrine should welcome Women of all ages. The Bench refused to maintain the Status-Quo on this issue citing Religious feelings. The one judge who opposed the view is interestingly a female judge.

The judge Indu Malhotra opined that Notions of rationality cannot be brought into matters of religion. But then, the issue seems to be far from over legally as those arguing for the status quo at Sabarimala planning to immediately move a review petition in the Supreme court.

Hindu group representatives have reacted sharply, calling the SC verdict “ultra judicial activism that trespasses into religious practices”. It will be interesting to see how women believers react. They are likely to be caught between what the law says and their own faith
