Special Court for Pawan Kalyan Case

A criminal case was filed by volunteers against Pawan Kalyan for making derogatory remarks against the volunteers and tarnishing government’s reputation in February, 2024. During the hearing on Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh High Court made it clear to the petitioners that Pawan Kalyan was not a public representative when he made comments on volunteers.

During his now famous Vaarahi Yatra, Pawan Kalyan had said that vital information collected by volunteers was going into the hands of anti- social elements leading to kidnaps of women.

Last year, the YSRCP government filed a criminal case against Pawan Kalyan. Five volunteers gave affidavits in the matter, though they recently said that YSRCP leaders took their signatures and filed the petition in the Court.

Given this backdrop, the public prosecutor had filed a petition to revoke prosecution on Pawan Kalyan, in Guntur Court. On November 18 last year, the Judge in Guntur Court gave orders for revoking prosecution on the Deputy Chief Minister.

Questioning the judgement, K Sarala and three others filed criminal revision cases in High Court. The lawyer on petitioners’ side Jada Sravan Kumar presented his case on Tuesday.

As Pawan Kalyan is a public representative, the case must be moved to a special Court where the cases on public representatives are handled, he argued.

However, the Judge expressed doubts on the issue. He pointed out when Pawan Kalyan made comments on volunteers, he was not a public representative. Hence, there was no need to go to the special court, the Judge clarified.

The Judge ordered for further hearing based on the doubt and postponed the hearing. High Court Judge T Mallikarjuna Rao gave directives in the matter.
