Telangana government had implemented a 50% women reservations in the recent elections held for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). However the whole purpose of the reservations is upturned as husbands and male relatives have been calling the shots in place of several women corporators.

The situation turned so worse that GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy released a circular aiming to do away with the practice. Husbands and male kin of women corporators are even writing proposals, putting up requests for works and even chairing meetings. As a result corruption is also rampant.
This is not a new practice. In fact in 2009, the then mayor Banda Karthika Reddy had written to the state government asking for permission to take the aid of her husband to supervise the development of the city as she cited her lack of experience in active administration as reason for her need for help from her spouse.
