Indian Climate Justice Activist, Licypriya Kanjugam, was removed from the stage and detained for half an hour for her protests during an ongoing COP28 session.
The 28th edition of the UN Climate Change Conference is being held in Dubai. The focus of this year’s COP is to ‘identify global solutions for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.’
Licypriya, who is one of the youngest climate activists, stormed a COP session, demanding to phase out fossil fuels as it remains a major cause of many of the climate crises at present. In a two-minute-long video shared on social media, we could see Licypriya entering the podium and asking the world leaders to work together to end the usage of fossil fuels until she is detained and taken backstage.
Licypriya has received support for her actions, even from the members present in the session. But, that has been the case for a while now. Countries promise to work together for a better environment, but, they hardly make the necessary decisions to protect the climate the best they could.
Whether today’s act will have any effect, we may already know the answer.
Here is the full video of my protest today disrupting the UN High Level Plenary Session of #COP28UAE. They detained me for over 30 minutes after this protest. My only crime- Asking to Phase Out Fossil Fuels, the top cause of climate crisis today. Now they kicked me out of COP28. pic.twitter.com/ToPIJ3K9zM
