Bengaluru woman arrested for fraud

A Bengaluru woman has been arrested by the city’s cybercrime police for allegedly using her husband’s account to spend nearly ₹28.74 lakh on online shopping.

The complaint was filed by her husband, a doctor, who stated that he married the accused, also a doctor, in March 2023. Between June 2023 and November 2024, she reportedly accessed his account through his tablet and purchased more than 2,500 products. Police revealed that most of these items were ordered for her parents.

The complainant accused his wife of systematically conspiring with her family to cheat him by diverting funds for their benefit. Based on his statement, investigators booked the woman and her parents under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The charges include Section 61 for criminal conspiracy, which carries imprisonment from six months to life in extreme cases. Section 318 covers cheating, with a punishment of up to three years in prison and fines. Section 319 deals with cheating by impersonation, attracting up to five years in jail.

Under the Information Technology Act, unauthorised digital access and account misuse can result in up to three years in jail, a fine of ₹1 lakh, or both. Police said investigations are underway to verify each transaction and examine digital records.

If proven guilty, the accused and her parents could face severe punishment, including long jail terms, financial penalties, and possible property attachment.
