India’s Got Latent, a YouTube show by comedian Samay Raina, is in controversy once again. This time, it is over a contestant’s comment about dog meat consumption in Arunachal Pradesh.
The show that had an uproar over a joke on actress Deepika Padukone’s mental health struggles is now under fire for something said by contestant Jessy Nabam on the show that people from her state, Arunachal Pradesh, consume dog meat, including their own pets.

During the programme, Raina asked Nabam if she ever had dog meat, to which she replied, “I know because my friends eat it. They even eat their pets at times.”
Within a short span, the remarks evoked immense social media wrath against her by several who tagged her comments as misrepresentative of the native population of Arunachal Pradesh.

The backlash gained intensity when a worried citizen, Armaan Ram Welly Bakha, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Nabam on January 31, 2025.
He complained that the statements were derogatory and hurtful to the people of Arunachal Pradesh and suggested that the authority take steps in order to refrain from such incidents in the future.

This incident revived conversations on portraying regional cultures nationally and how, inadvertently, harm might be repressed into making things a stereotype.
Till date, both Samay Raina and the producers of that show haven’t publicly responded regarding this controversy along with the complaint lodged against Nabam.
That raises a strong concern for every sensitive individual towards cultural humour by which today people take comedy really seriously as light could turn grave any time without knowing.
