Doctors are seen as lifesavers with a duty to protect humanity. But an incident in Haridwar has shocked people, showing the worst failure of a system meant to save lives and provide dignity in healthcare.
A poor man brought his pregnant wife to the women’s hospital for delivery. Instead of admitting her, the doctor on duty allegedly refused to take responsibility and asked the family to leave the hospital immediately.
The woman was already in intense labour pain. With no medical help available, she delivered her baby on the floor. The family was left helpless, watching the birth take place without proper care or support.
Only after media reports and local pressure did the hospital staff admit the mother and newborn. The delay exposed both to avoidable risk, sparking anger among people who demanded accountability from the hospital.
Authorities later announced an inquiry into the incident. Denying admission in such a case not only endangered lives but also highlighted serious concerns about the condition of public healthcare facilities and the responsibility of those entrusted with saving lives.
