Indian Tourism Dead? Why Is Thailand Miles Ahead?

India tourism foreign arrivals vs domestic travel

India tourism is facing a major perception gap. Many claim the sector is failing because foreign arrivals are low. Yet domestic tourism is powering growth silently.

A viral post by Neha Nagar sparked debate. Thailand welcomed 35 million tourists in 2024. India recorded 9.66 million foreign arrivals. This is a 3.6 times gap. Singapore, a smaller destination, reportedly performs better too.

Nagar listed India’s natural riches like beaches, mountains, deserts, and backwaters. She blamed frauds, taxi mafias, bad infrastructure, and low civic sense. She also claimed global travellers see India as unhygienic. Many disagreed.

Replies argued that the Thailand comparison is unfair. Thailand markets itself as a leisure-focused destination. India has cultural depth and diversity. It is not positioned as a tourism-only economy.

India has a $4 trillion economy. Tourism is not the core pillar. In 2023, there were 230 crore domestic tourist visits. 140 crore Indians are travelling within the country. Domestic tourism drives the sector more than foreign visitors.

There were 9.96 million foreign tourist arrivals and 20.57 million international arrivals including NRIs. Earnings reached ₹2.93 lakh crore. These numbers show tourism is not dead.

Hygiene issues and scams damage India’s image. Better civic behaviour and infrastructure can improve foreign appeal. The solution is growth and reform. Constant comparison is not helpful.
