An Air India flight from Chicago to Delhi was forced to return mid-air after 11 out of 12 onboard lavatories became clogged, leaving over 300 passengers with access to just one working toilet.
The flight, AI126, had been airborne for nearly four and a half hours when the issue was detected over Greenland. Instead of continuing to Delhi, the aircraft turned back, resulting in a ten-hour ordeal for passengers.

The airline confirmed that the flight had to return due to a “technical issue” and stated that all passengers were provided with accommodation and alternative travel arrangements. Reports suggest that foreign objects, including polythene bags and clothing, were found in the plumbing, causing the toilets to malfunction.
This incident is the latest addition to the long-growing list of complaints against Air India. Recently, the airline has faced multiple issues, including poor in-flight conditions, unclean cabins, malfunctioning seats, and last-minute flight cancellations. Just weeks ago, a New York-Mumbai Air India flight had to return after a security threat note was found in the toilet.

Additionally, passengers have frequently reported dissatisfaction with the airline’s service standards, with complaints ranging from mismanagement to lack of responsiveness to grievances.
While Air India has assured passengers of refunds and rescheduling options, many travelers, especially those using airline partnerships and loyalty programs, have reported difficulties in even obtaining the said compensation.

This recurring pattern has led to increasing concerns about the airline’s reliability and service quality on international as well as domestic routes.
