A 31-year-old man named Akhil from Ramachandrapuram, Sangareddy district, died by suicide in Eluru after falling into heavy debt from online betting apps. His family hails from the YSR district in Andhra Pradesh.
Before taking the step, Akhil called his father and confessed about the mounting debt and harassment from app executives. His father asked him to return home so they could handle the situation together.
When the hotel staff noticed that Akhil’s room was locked for too long, they alerted the management. The door was forced open, and Akhil was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
Police registered a case based on his father’s complaint and began an investigation.
India banned online betting apps in August after several reports of suicides and financial losses. Despite awareness campaigns and warnings in the media, many still fall victim to these platforms. Akhil’s case highlights the urgent need to seek help before it’s too late.
