A peculiar case has come out of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, where an autorickshaw carrying 18 passengers, along with the driver, became the center of attention after a video of the overcrowded vehicle went viral.
The clip, shared on social media, showed police stopping the vehicle and asking the passengers to step out one by one, revealing the sheer extent of overcrowding.
The police confirmed that the incident took place on February 15 during a routine check. As the footage spread online, authorities seized the autorickshaw and initiated legal action against the driver for violating safety regulations.
Social media users reacted in different ways. Some questioned the strict action against the driver, arguing that a simple warning would have sufficed.
Others commented on the vehicle’s capacity to hold so many people and the driver’s skill in managing the overloaded ride.
The official handle of Jhansi Police later posted a statement from the Area Officer of Tahrauli, explaining that carrying so many passengers posed a serious safety risk. Despite the mixed reactions online, authorities maintained that overloading vehicles in this manner is dangerous and cannot be ignored.
The ongoing issue of overcrowded public transport in several parts of India persists even now. Passengers often risk their safety due to a lack of affordable and accessible transportation options.
