Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector could be heading for another turn. His current tenure is set to end this month, but reports suggest that the BCCI could allow him to continue in the role until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The final decision is expected to be taken at the BCCI Annual General Meeting on September 18. The latest developments suggest that Ajit Agarkar could remain in charge of the senior selection committee for now.
According to a reports a section of the BCCI is reportedly satisfied with the coordination between Agarkar and India head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The understanding between the chief selector and head coach is believed to be one of the reasons why some board officials want to continue with the current setup.
There is also a feeling within the BCCI that changing the selection committee at this stage could disturb the team’s preparation ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
As a result, Agarkar’s position appears relatively safe for now, although the final decision will only come after the board discusses the matter.
One development has added more weight to the possibility of Agarkar staying on.
The BCCI has invited applications for the junior selection committee but has not opened applications for the senior selection committee. This could indicate that the board is not currently looking to replace Agarkar.
There have also been reports that VVS Laxman could be considered for the chief selector role in the future.
One possibility is that Laxman could take charge of the senior selection committee while also continuing his responsibilities at the Centre of Excellence.
For now, though, Agarkar appears to have the advantage. Agarkar became chairman of India’s senior selection committee in July 2023. Since then, India have enjoyed considerable success in white ball cricket.
India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final before winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. The team then won the 2025 Champions Trophy and followed it with the 2026 T20 World Cup title.
The selectors have also overseen the introduction of several younger players, particularly in T20I cricket, while making some major calls during the transition from the previous generation.
These results give Agarkar a strong case to continue. The biggest question around Agarkar’s tenure is Test cricket.
India’s recent Test results have not matched their white ball success, and the team currently faces a difficult fight to reach the 2027 World Test Championship final.
That could become an important factor when the BCCI reviews Agarkar’s future.
Despite, with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, some officials reportedly prefer stability over another major change in the selection setup.
If the BCCI decides to extend Agarkar’s tenure, a one-year extension could keep him in charge until around June 2027, allowing him to oversee the team’s preparations and selection for the ODI World Cup.
For now, Agarkar’s future remains officially undecided. But the latest developments suggest that the BCCI may be preparing to keep him at the helm for another year.
