Hardik Pandya‘s possible return to Gujarat Titans has reportedly hit a major roadblock, with captaincy emerging as the key reason behind the collapse of the proposed reunion.
According to reports, Gujarat Titans were open to bringing back their former captain.
The franchise also reportedly discussed the move with current captain Shubman Gill, who was said to be open to Pandya’s return.
But there was one major condition from Pandya’s side he wanted the captaincy back.
That reportedly changed everything. Hardik Pandya had led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their very first season in 2022 and also took them to the final in 2023.
But after returning to Mumbai Indians in 2024, his IPL journey has not gone as planned.
Mumbai Indians endured a poor 2026 season, losing 10 of their 14 matches and finishing ninth. Hardik Pandya also struggled to make a major impact during the campaign.
So, was a return to Gujarat really on the cards? It appears it was. But was captaincy always going to be the deciding factor?
Gujarat already have Gill as their captain, and the franchise reportedly did not agree to Hardik Pandya’s demand to take over the leadership again. The talks therefore fell apart.
Hardik Pandya now remains with Mumbai Indians, but his IPL future has become a bigger question than before.
After a difficult season and a failed GT reunion, will Mumbai continue with him, or could another franchise make a move for the all rounder?
For now, one thing is clear Hardik Pandya’s reported captaincy demand has made his next IPL move even more interesting.
