Injured for IPL, Fit for Nothing? Is Ind Paying the Price?

India players injury concerns

India’s injury list is growing, but a source at the BCCI Centre of Excellence has pointed towards a bigger problem players playing through injuries during the IPL before arriving at the CoE for rehabilitation.

According to the report’s, franchise pressure and financial pressure can push players to continue playing despite injuries.

The problem then reaches the main setup, where the CoE physios have to manage their recovery.

Players play through injuries during IPL due to franchise and financial pressures and then are dumped onto unsuspecting COE physios, the source told.

The comments come at a time when India are already dealing with several fitness issues ahead of the Sri Lanka Tests.

Sai Sudharsan is the latest player to be ruled out after failing to recover from a toe injury.

He has been joined on the injury list by Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar, while Akash Deep is also unavailable.

There is also concern around captain Shubman Gill, who missed the first day of India’s practice match after hurting his finger.

The bigger question is whether India’s injury management is only dealing with the damage after it happens.

If players are arriving at the CoE with injuries after pushing through franchise cricket, should there be more control over their workload during the IPL?

VVS Laxman has previously spoken about communication between the CoE, team management and selectors. But with India’s injury list growing, is that communication enough?
