India’s test captaincy has been open for grabbers ever since skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the red-ball format.
Shubman Gill’s heartfelt tribute to the captain has opened the gates of speculation regarding him being chosen as India’s next long-term test captain.
However, this opinion is not without some strong opposition from Kohli fans.
Many Virat fans believe that Kohli still has many more years left to give to Indian cricket in the red-ball format.
They are of the opinion that since Rohit, the sole reason Virat left test captaincy, is out of the picture now, it is high time for him to return and take back the throne that was always his to sit on.
While it may be a nice thought for many, the fact is that Kohli’s test figures in recent years have been less than optimal, with him struggling to put runs on the board, especially in SENA countries.
While Gill also doesn’t have a particularly perfect form, unlike Kohli, he still has many years to learn and improve.
With speculation at an all-time high, it will be interesting to see what the BCCI decides in the battle between experience and longevity.
