Kumar Sangakkara replaces Rahul Dravid as Rajasthan Royals head coach. The franchise is bringing in the Sri Lankan legend to take charge after Dravid’s brief stint. This marks a new phase for the Royals ahead of the 2026 IPL season.
Sangakkara takes full charge
A veteran of 594 international matches, Sangakkara is no stranger to the Royals. Since 2021, he has served as Director of Cricket and stepped in as coach when needed. Under his watch, RR reached the IPL 2022 final but lost to Gujarat Titans.
Royals’ mixed seasons
In the last four years, the team reached the playoffs twice but also faced an average 2023 season, finishing fifth. While the highs showed progress, consistency has been missing. Sangakkara now has the task of shaping a stronger unit.
Dravid’s short return
Rahul Dravid returned to RR after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. His time with the Royals was brief but notable. Having earlier served as captain in 2012-13 and mentor in 2014-15, his exit once again created space for Sangakkara.
Leadership concerns
Sanju Samson has been central to RR’s plans but injuries and reported doubts about his future have created uncertainty. He played only nine matches in 2025 due to a side strain. Sangakkara now faces the challenge of securing stable leadership.
Spin remains a weak link
The spin department has long been a concern for Rajasthan Royals. A lack of reliable Indian spinners has cost them key games. Sangakkara will need to address this problem if RR are to compete with teams like CSK and KKR.
Underachievers since 2008
Since their title win in 2008, Rajasthan Royals have often been seen as underachievers. Sangakkara brings experience and clarity, but success will depend on fixing captaincy and spin. The 2026 season will test whether he can rewrite their story.
