Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has explained why Shreyas Iyer should not be compared with Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I captain.
Ahead of the first T20I against New Zealand, Abhishek Nayar said the two have faced different challenges, as Shreyas Iyer has played more matches away from home.
Abhishek Nayar pointed out that India played more matches at home under Suryakumar while preparing for the T20 World Cup.
In comparison, Shreyas Iyer has already led India in overseas conditions, including tours of England and Zimbabwe, along with the Asian Games in China.
Abhishek also believes a series win in New Zealand would help Iyer earn respect as a captain and prove that he can lead India to success outside home conditions.
Shreyas Iyer has won 11 of his 21 T20Is as captain, losing eight matches, while two ended without a result. Six of his defeats have come in overseas conditions.
India also failed to win a match in the series against Ireland and England during the early part of his captaincy stint.
In comparison, Suryakumar has won 40 of his 52 matches as captain, with eight losses, two ties and two no results.
India will play five T20Is against New Zealand, starting in Christchurch on October 22. The series gives Iyer another opportunity to improve his overseas record and show that he can lead India to wins away from home.
