Stephen Fleming has emerged as the leading candidate to become England’s next Test head coach after Brendon McCullum’s exit.
Reports suggest the ECB has already held discussions with the former New Zealand captain, with Fleming now leading the race for the role.
The timing is interesting. Fleming recently ended his long coaching journey with Chennai Super Kings after winning five IPL titles.
His success in franchise has made him one of the most respected coaches in the game, and England now believes he could bring the same impact to their Test team.
England’s recent performances have raised several questions. Heavily beaten in the Ashes and also lost to New Zealand.
The retirement of Ben Stokes has added another problem, leaving the team without a full time Test captain. The ECB now appears ready for a fresh start.
Fleming isn’t the only name in contention. Andy Flower, Tom Moody, Jonathan Trott and Richard Dawson are also being considered.
Despite, reports claim Fleming is the favourite. If the appointment is delayed, Marcus Trescothick is expected to guide England during the Pakistan series as interim coach.
Fleming has already proved himself in CSK, but Test cricket brings a different challenge. Managing England’s dressing room and rebuilding the red ball team will be a completely different task.
