After two back-to-back flops Kanguva and Retro,Suriya is banking on his next project, Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji. The film has completed its shooting phase and is currently in post-production, raising expectations among fans and industry insiders alike.
Although earlier reports hinted at a Diwali 2025 release, new buzz suggests that the makers are eyeing Pongal 2026 instead. This shift, if confirmed, could set the stage for a massive box office clash in Kollywood, as two big-ticket films—Vijay’s Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi—have already booked the Pongal slot officially.
If Karuppu also enters the fray, it would make the Pongal season extremely competitive with three major releases. Industry insiders believe this could lead to a situation where two films suffer in terms of screen count and revenue, even if they perform well critically or with audiences.
Some Kollywood trade experts argue that such a clash is unlikely, given the potential impact on business. They feel that while two major films can share screens, the inclusion of a third could turn the festival box office into a losing game for more than one.
For now, the Karuppu team has not made any official announcements regarding the release date. It remains to be seen whether they will stick to a Diwali release or take the risk of going head-to-head with Vijay and Sivakarthikeyan during Pongal 2026.
