Meta has announced that ads and subscriptions are coming to WhatsApp in the next few months. This is part of Meta’s plan to earn more from WhatsApp, which it bought for $19 billion in 2014.
Until now, WhatsApp had no ads and focused mainly on business messaging. But with over 3 billion users, Meta is now ready to monetize it more aggressively.

Ads will appear in the Updates tab, which includes Status and Channels. Meta confirmed that private messages, calls, and statuses will remain fully encrypted. This means no ads will appear inside personal chats.
The ads will look similar to Instagram Stories. Some may include buttons to message businesses directly.

WhatsApp will use limited data like your location, language, and activity history to show relevant ads. If your WhatsApp is linked to Facebook or Instagram, ad targeting may become even more personalized.
Meta is also introducing paid subscriptions for select Channels. Creators and businesses will be able to offer exclusive content for a monthly fee.

These payments will be handled through the Google and Apple app stores. More Channels are expected to get this feature soon.
Many users are unhappy with this change. WhatsApp has long been trusted as a clean, ad-free platform. Some users feel betrayed and may consider switching to alternatives like Signal or Telegram.
A similar backlash happened in 2021 after a privacy update. Millions left, but most returned after the initial panic. Still, this time might be different.
Ads and paid content — even if not inside chats — could slowly affect user trust and lead to frustration.
For now, most people will likely continue using WhatsApp. The app’s wide reach and strong user base still make it hard to leave, despite growing concerns.
