Peddi review debate on film criticism

What went wrong with Peddi has already been discussed in our review. But what went wrong with Peddi reviews is a bigger discussion.

Today, when an average or watchable big-star film releases, a section of reviewers goes to extremes. Either they overhype it or completely dismiss it.

But reviews are meant to set expectations, not chase engagement.

Peddi is a good example. It is not a bad film, but it is not a great film either. It has strengths, and it also has issues in writing, character arcs, and execution.

At M9, our first online review came right after the US premiere. We spoke about both the positives and negatives and recommended the film with the right expectations.

Because reviews should guide audiences, not protect stars or push narratives.

In the end, audiences are evolving faster than reviewers. Now it is up to reviewers to decide whether they continue chasing positive or negative extremes or learn from the modern day audiences and become more balanced, more critical, and more trustworthy.
