A recently filed RTI has revealed a setback in Uttar Pradesh’s regional aviation expansion. The findings suggest that several newly launched airports are struggling to sustain operations. This has raised questions about demand and long term planning.
According to data obtained from the Airports Authority of India, six of the seven airports inaugurated after 2021 have cancelled scheduled commercial services. Many of these facilities reportedly failed to maintain consistent passenger traffic and route viability.
Kushinagar International Airport initially witnessed a surge in flights after its launch. However, operations gradually declined over time. Services were eventually suspended in late 2023 despite substantial investment and maintenance costs.
Airports in Azamgarh, Aligarh, Shravasti, Chitrakoot, and Moradabad also saw commercial services halted within months of their inauguration. The situation highlights issues such as weak passenger demand and limited airline participation.
In contrast, some established or upgraded airports in the state have performed relatively better. Ayodhya Airport continues to operate services. Cities like Kanpur and Agra have reported stable or improving passenger numbers.
The RTI findings underline a clear divide in Uttar Pradesh’s aviation landscape. While some airports show growth, others remain underutilised. The focus now shifts to how authorities will address these challenges.
Going forward, policymakers may need to reassess route planning and airline incentives. Strengthening connectivity and ensuring sustainable demand will be crucial. The future of the state’s regional aviation expansion depends on corrective measures.
