The United Kingdom (UK) is amongst the major international hub for high studies, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Meanwhile, there is a massive gender disparity in the STEM Education and employment sector all over the world and in the UK from one hand. One of the measures initiated by the British Council in collaboration with five UK universities is a programme British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM for the year 2024-25 for ladies who are talented in the field of STEM.
Scholarship includes tuition fee, allowance for living costs, hostel fees, medical insurance for international students, and support for taking English courses. Learners are offered a variety of courses to choose from like Data Science, CS, Computer Engineering, Actuarial Science etc.
Such an overseas training program is a big chance for the female students of India to fly up and make the share of female STEM graduates among the participating countries India, which have the highest percentage of STEM graduates (43%) among the countries, further residual.
India not only has more women graduates in STEM subjects than the developed countries such as US, UK, Germany and France, but has also outrun the United Kingdom in the area of women participation in STEM. On the other hand, only 14% Indian women are represented in STEM jobs, implying a great importance should be given to having necessary support and motivation to the women in this area.
The British Council Women in STEM Scholarship programme seeks to equip female students with knowledge and skills that would enable them fully pursue their academic and professional aspirations in STEM, and further collaboration, innovation and global competitiveness. The deadline period also varies as per the instruction of the each university chiefly ranging between March to April with 2024 as the reference year.
