The H-1B visa, once considered the main route for Indians seeking an American career, is gradually losing its appeal. Many Indian professionals are now exploring alternative global work options as visa uncertainty continues to grow.
Indians Prefer Remote Work Over Relocation
According to a report by Indeed on global career work and mobility in India, nearly 49% of professionals would prefer working for a US employer from India if their visa option was unavailable.
The report also found that 61% of Indian professionals favour global remote roles instead of relocating overseas for office based jobs.
Survey Highlights Growing Visa Fatigue
The study surveyed 552 employers and 1,019 employees across India and international markets. It shows that many workers are actively seeking alternatives to avoid visa delays and growing backlogs.
This trend reflects rising frustration with the complexity and uncertainty surrounding international work visas.
H-1B Uncertainty Under Trump Administration
The shift comes as the H-1B system faces tighter scrutiny under the Donald Trump administration. While Indians still receive over 70 percent of H-1B visas through the lottery, the process has become less reliable.
Entry level professionals are particularly affected, as approvals and timelines have grown more unpredictable.
Lack of Visa Clarity Adds to Confusion
The report highlights a lack of clarity among applicants. Only 15% of professionals say they clearly understand current visa rules.
This confusion stems from frequent policy changes and efforts to curb fraud. As a result, many workers feel unsure about long term planning.
Interest in Global Careers Still Strong
Despite challenges, around 44% of Indian professionals continue to value international careers. Another 51% believe that working abroad offers benefits difficult to replicate while staying in India.
However, the idea of the US as the only career destination is fading for many.
New Destinations Gain Popularity
Countries like Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom are attracting renewed interest from Indian professionals.
With more welcoming policies from employers and governments, these destinations are emerging as strong alternatives as US visa rules continue to tighten.
