An Indian worker on an H-1B visa has been arrested in the United States. He was allegedly involved in an $800,000 scam targeting an elderly American. The case has drawn attention due to its scale and timing.

Nigam Bhatt, 25, was reportedly working as a software engineer in New Jersey. He was arrested on April 7 while attempting to collect gold from a victim. Authorities intervened before the exchange could take place.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, the scam targeted senior citizens. Victims were told their bank accounts and Social Security benefits were frozen. They were then asked to hand over gold to resolve the issue.

Officials believe this was not an isolated case. Multiple elderly individuals were reportedly targeted. This suggests the presence of a larger organised network behind such scams.

Bhatt was intercepted in Louisiana and is now facing extortion charges. The investigation is ongoing. Authorities are trying to identify other possible links in the network.

The incident has gained further attention due to a similar case. Recently, another Indian national, Tushar Sharma, was arrested in New York over an alleged $200,000 fraud.

These repeated cases have sparked concern within sections of the public. They have also led to discussions around visa holders and compliance with laws in host countries.

At the same time, it is important to note that such incidents involve individuals. They do not represent the entire Indian community abroad. Many professionals continue to contribute positively.

However, cases like these can impact perception. Legal issues involving visa holders can create additional scrutiny. This may affect those who are working and building careers legitimately.
