An Indian origin couple who is accused of double murder in the state of Gujarat has just been convicted for a big crime in the United Kingdom. The couple has been convicted for smuggling more than half ton of cocaine into Australia through their front companies. The amount of cocaine involved in this case is staggering and is usually associated with huge drug cartels.
In 2019, India tried to extradite the couple back to the country on charges of double murder. The UK denied the request filed by New Delhi on grounds that the couple will have no prospect of early release if sentenced for life.
Both the convicted have been employed at a flight services company in Heathrow which made them aware about the freight system and procedures at airport. The couple used a front company to export 514 KG of cocaine into Australia. The shipment was captured by the Australian authority in 2021 which led to an investigation.
The total worth of the cocaine exported is around ₹600 crore. The authorities in the UK are now working on seizing the illegally gained assets by the couple.
