The waves of human rights have reached the walls of the US Senate too, with the marginalized LGBTQ+ community fighting for their rights finding representation as Minita Sanghvi, an Indian origin lawyer and human rights activist, becomes the first openly gay woman in the State Senate.

Currently serving her 2nd term as the finance minister of Saratoga Springs, she has opted to contest the state Senate, driven by her desire to bring about positive change. According to her, “We need a leader who will put people ahead of partisan politics in Albany.”

Announcing her candidacy, Sanghvi describes herself as a parent, business educator, and public servant, emphasizing her role beyond being just a politician. Her motivation lies in the quest to ensure a better future, advocating for rights and freedom for all citizens. Her agenda includes healthcare access for women, LGBTQ rights, and providing equal opportunities for all.

Minita Sanghvi’s run for Senate election is welcomed news, adding another Indian-origin woman to the US Senate. She pursued her undergraduate and MBA in Mumbai before heading to the University of Arizona for further studies. Eventually, after getting the US citizenship in 2010, she became a successful businesswoman and a human rights activist.
