In a horrifying escalation of gang violence in Edmonton, Canada, an 11-year-old boy and his 41-year-old father, Harpreet Uppal, were deliberately shot and killed outside a gas station.
The incident occurred on Thursday, with police labeling it a “sick and twisted” act. The father was targeted and followed, leading to the fatal attack, while the young boy, who has not been named publicly, was intentionally killed once the assailants discovered his presence. Another child, a friend of the victim, was thankfully unharmed.
Harpreet Uppal, known to the police and previously a target in a 2021 shooting, had survived an attack at a pizza restaurant. This recent tragedy raises concerns about the rising gun violence in Edmonton, prompting Alberta’s Premier, Danielle Smith, to express her distress.
The city has witnessed a surge in shootings and gang-related crimes, but the deliberate targeting and killing of a child have intensified law enforcement efforts.
Edmonton police Acting Supt Colin Derksen stated, “We’re going to give it everything we got. We’re pulling out all the stops. We lost a child here.” A burned-out vehicle found nearby is believed to be connected to the shooting, adding complexity to the ongoing investigation.
Autopsies on both victims are scheduled for early next week, as the community grapples with the tragic loss of a young life caught in the crossfire of escalating violence.
