An international student has shared their frustrating experience of waiting over a month for their OPT card after receiving an approval email from USCIS. Despite the approval, no update has appeared on the portal, and the physical Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card is still missing.
Approval received but no card
The F-1 visa holder said they applied for Post-OPT on August 8, 2025, using premium processing and received an approval email on September 3. However, the EAD card essential to begin work has yet to arrive.
Confusion between SEVIS and USCIS
The student’s school confirmed that the SEVIS portal lists the OPT as active with September 3 as the start date. But the USCIS portal still shows no progress. This mismatch has left the applicant in limbo, unable to start their job despite having an offer.
The pressure of the 90-day rule
OPT students are allowed only 90 days of unemployment. Every passing day without an EAD card increases the risk of violating visa terms. Employers also refuse to onboard workers until the physical card is received, worsening the situation.
Growing reports of delays
Several other students have reported similar issues, suggesting the recent government shutdown may be causing delays in EAD production and delivery. Many have expressed anxiety over the uncertainty, saying approval should bring relief not more stress.
What students can do
Experts advise affected students to regularly check SEVIS updates, stay in touch with their Designated School Officials (DSOs), and keep employers informed. In some cases, contacting USCIS through an e-request or visiting a local field office can help escalate delayed card deliveries.
