The 2024 US elections is not only a test for the oldest democracy of the world but it is also a litmus test for the deep rooted institutional racism that exists in the country that calls itself the greatest in the world. This year’s presidential election presents faces different from the typical white males who have been representing for a large part of the history.
If you want to know how much progress the US has made to accomodate and accept people belonging to other races and religions then you probably need to ask ‘if’ it has made any progress at all. Indian origin republican Vivek Ramaswamy is battling for the face of the opposition and though hurtful, it is not shocking that at the end of the day, voters are rejecting him for his racial and religious identity.
It has come to knowledge that the campaign workers for his campaign heard that his dark skin and Muslim like appearance are some of the reasons they are not considering him. It is shocking to observe this in a developed country which considers itself as the guardian of the world.
The farce of religious harmony is a well constructed media narrative that both the conservatives and liberals have pushed for long. The fact remains that at the core of it, most of the US is not ready to accept any other religion or race in its country.
