Singh was reportedly performing Gatka, a traditional Sikh martial art involving swords or blades. He was seen holding a long blade and making ceremonial movements on a public street, prompting multiple 911 calls from passersby.

Police arrived shortly after and attempted to control the situation. According to the LAPD, Singh ignored several warnings to drop the weapon and attempted to flee. He allegedly threw a bottle at officers and injured himself during the encounter.

Police Claim Self-Defence

Following a brief chase, Singh exited his vehicle and allegedly charged at an officer with the blade raised. The officer fired in response. Singh was later declared dead at a local hospital.

The LAPD states the use of force was in self-defence, citing the imminent threat to officers and bystanders.

Public Debate Over Use of Force

The incident has sparked debate across communities and social media. While Gatka is traditionally ceremonial and non-violent, the manner in which Singh acted raised safety concerns. Some say the police acted within protocol, while others have called for an independent investigation.

Concerns Among Indian Immigrant Communities

The case has led to renewed fears among Indian-origin residents in the US, especially Sikhs. Community leaders worry such incidents may affect public perception and contribute to growing unease among immigrants.

As discussions continue, many are urging transparency, accountability, and greater cultural awareness in law enforcement responses.
