Texas Crash: Bodies Returning To India

Texas Crash

As reported earlier, a tragic car crash in Texas on December 26 claimed the lives of six Indians, including 28-year-old Rushil Barri, who had moved to the US in 2020.

The victims, all from the same family, were returning from a visit to Fossil Rim when their minivan was struck by a pickup truck driven by a 17-year-old in a no-passing zone.

Rushil Barri, his cousin Lokesh, Lokesh’s wife Naveena, and their children Krithik and Nishidha, along with Naveena’s parents, perished in the collision. Only Lokesh survived but is said to be critical. The 17-year-old driver of the pickup truck and another occupant sustained critical injuries.

Community members are organizing vigils in Houston and Metro Atlanta, and the bodies are expected to be flown to India on December 31.

Rushil Barri is remembered as a son, loving brother, great friend, and fun-loving uncle. Described as having an infectious positivity and easy-going nature, he left a lasting impact on those around him.

Rakesh Barri, Rushil’s brother, expressed the profound difficulty of accepting the tragedy. “He’s my half. I can’t digest it. He’s no more. Still, my mother can’t stand it,” said Rakesh, reflecting the family’s deep grief and struggle to come to terms with the loss.

Local groups, including the Indian Friends of Atlanta and Telugu Association of North America (TANA), are providing support to the grieving family. A fundraiser initiative has been started to raise funds for the transportation of the victims’ bodies to India, funeral expenses, and family support.
