Nikki Haley, an Indian-American presidential candidate, has secured victory in the Republican nominating contest in Washington DC by surpassing former President Donald Trump. This win has made her the first woman ever to win a Republican presidential primary.
Haley, 51, has garnered a significant 62.9% of the votes, totalling 1,274, while Trump was only able to secure 33.2%, receiving 676 votes. This victory not only helped her in moving forward in the 2024 race but is also marked as a historic moment considering she is the first Indian-American to win either the Democratic or Republican primaries.
She expressed her gratitude after the win, stating, “Let’s do it. Thank you, DC! We fight for every inch.” In another post, she even asserted, “Republicans closest to Washington’s dysfunction know that Donald Trump has brought nothing but chaos and division for the past 8 years. It’s time to start winning again and move our nation forward!”
Despite her victory in Washington DC, Haley faces us still facing a huge gap nationally, with 43 delegates compared to Trump’s 247. The Trump campaign dismissed her win as being crowned “Queen of the Swamp,” emphasizing the commitment to “drain the swamp” and prioritize America’s interests.
The Trump campaign is still confident in their candidate’s appeal outside the Washington DC sphere. Trump, 77, is likely to face 81-year-old President Joe Biden in the November 5 election.
