The Indian government’s proposal to form a committee or an additional “layer” for reviewing scripts on Over The Top (OTT) platforms has sparked humorous reactions from viewers. Apparently, the government is concerned that the content on these platforms is not aligned with ‘Indian values and culture.
Minister Anurag Thakur stressed that OTT platforms must reflect the “collective conscience” of the country and provide a “healthy viewing experience” for all age groups. So, no more vulgarity, no Westernization, and definitely no stereotyping of India and its diverse culture. Can we still enjoy spicy masala films, though? That’s the million-dollar question!
During the meeting, some shows like Afwaah, Lust Stories, and Rana Naidu were specifically mentioned as causes of concern.
Industry stakeholders seem to be at odds with the proposed regulations, fearing it might stifle the potential growth and expansion of OTT platforms.
The industry has a point over regulation might lead to content piracy and significant revenue loss. Not to mention, creativity needs room to breathe, just like we need fresh air after binge-watching our favorite shows.
Amid this comedic drama, the I&B minister also called for simplified user experiences, catering to differently-abled audiences, and more content on the history of India and Indian mythology.
Well while it’s essential to maintain cultural sensitivity and respect, creativity thrives in the realm of unrestricted expression. As we eagerly await the final decision, let’s hope that the future of OTT platforms remains vibrant, diverse, and, most importantly, entertaining!
