The iconic trio of Imtiaz Ali, A.R. Rahman, and Irshad Kamil are back with “Chamkila.” They have given us timeless gems like “Sadda Haq,” “Agar Tum Saath Ho,” “Kun Faya Kun,” and “Tum Se Hi,” among many others that have become classic hits.
The movie, which has already built huge anticipation among fans, is set to release on April 12. Its album dropped recently as a pre-release gift for the fans, and it did not disappoint upon the first listen.
We have a total of six tracks, among which two songs, “Ishq Mitaye” and “Naram Kalja,” were already released a few weeks ago. “Ishq Mitaye” is a love song that elevates to the next level when the “Main Hoon Punjab” part kicks in. The background chorus adds a grandiose to the song, reminiscent of “Sadda Haq.” Mohit Chauhan delivers with the same energy, making it feel like his voice hasn’t aged a bit.
The next song, “Naram Kalja,” is a funky track infused with desiness that hooks you from the first listen. The use of traditional instruments and gidda-like feels gives a wholesome flavor to the song. Alka Yagnik’s angelic voice acts as an unexpected surprise.
The third song, “Tu Kya Jaane,” is a proper romantic track that brings necessary calmness to the album, with singer Yashika Sikka channeling the same vibe as Harshdeep Kaur in “Katiya Karu” or “Heer” from “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.”
Another powerful track of the movie is “Baaja,” which begins with a beautiful and soft feel, reaching its climax with Mohit Chauhan’s vocals assisted by a few artists. “Baaja” feels like it might become the Chamkila anthem in the upcoming days. The best part of the song comes when the rather fast-paced vocals start to kick in, ending the song on a high note.
“Bol Mohabbat” is yet another powerful song that might act as the climax number. Vocals by A.R. Rahman himself and Kailash Kher add divinity to the song. The last song of the album, “Vida Karo,” is a heartbreaking song that might come at the end, given that we already know the fate of Amar Singh Chamkila. This song might serve as a homage to his musical journey.
“Chamkila” has been one of the most awaited Bollywood albums this year. While it might seem too quick to judge, the initial listening experience makes us believe that it was worth the wait. Do let us know your thoughts on it.
