Amidst the speculations of Paramount’s entry into the streaming business in India, JioCinema has offered a new surprise for its users. It was uncertain whether Paramount Plus would be launched in India as an independent streaming platform considering the competitive market with players like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney and JioCinema. JioCinema is now hosting the content of Paramount Plus on its platform through a separate hub.
The content would be available only on a subscription basis. This is the model used by platforms like Amazon Prime which offers a great range of studios and content by an additional subscription. JioCinema is already offering HBO and Peacock’s content in its subscription.
Paramount’s plan to push its content partnership with a local player like JioCinema looks like a sensible move as a new competitor in the market would have made it only difficult for the market to recover.
Paramount also holds shares in Viacom18, the parent company of JioCinema. The new content addition to JioCinema is only making the platform a fit rival for giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
This news comes right before the reports of a potential merger of Warner Bros Discovery with Paramount Global.
