Peacemaker S2: Fan Nightmare or James Gunn Genius?

James Gunn’s new DCU faces backlash

James Gunn has once again reshaped the DC Universe, this time through season 2 of his HBO Max series Peacemaker and its official companion podcast. Though Gunn insists the new season is fully canon, his frequent continuity changes are leaving many fans more confused than excited.

One of the most striking changes is the removal of the Snyderverse Justice League cameo that appeared in the season 1 finale. In its place, Gunn has introduced a new group called the “Justice Gang.” He also claims the actual Justice League doesn’t exist yet in the current DCU timeline.

For fans who followed previous storylines, this change feels less like creative evolution and more like erasing established continuity. Key characters like Flash and Wonder Woman are described as “likely to exist,” but remain undefined. Meanwhile, Aquaman is entirely missing, as Jason Momoa now shifts to play Lobo in a different DCU film.

The companion podcast only adds to the confusion. Gunn downplays Peacemaker’s crude jokes about Superman and Aquaman, calling them mere internet rumours. Villains like Kite-Man are suddenly declared alive in prison, even after being presumed dead.

Smaller details such as Cheetos or even the old Porky’s movie being considered part of DCU canon seem trivial compared to the larger unanswered questions about major superheroes.

The bigger issue is that the current DC Universe feels fragmented and unstable. Gunn’s tendency to retcon and adjust continuity on the go points to a lack of long-term direction. Instead of building a unified world, the universe feels increasingly chaotic and inconsistent.

For the DCU to succeed, Gunn needs to create a clear and consistent foundation. Otherwise, fans may find it difficult to stay invested in a universe where the rules change with every new release.
