OTTs Under Fire: AI Mahabharat Gets Heavy Backlash

JioHotstar Mahabharat AI controversy

JioHotstar is set to launch Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, a mythological epic created using artificial intelligence. However, the use of AI for such a project has sparked strong debate online.

Journalist Ajeet Bharti criticised the makers for relying on AI, highlighting several visual errors from the trailer. He pointed out that Draupadi’s blouse appeared to have perfectly stitched sleeves a design unlikely to exist in that era. He also questioned the uneven proportions of a sage’s body and the height of his staff.

Many viewers supported his comments, arguing that mythological epics should not be recreated using AI, as it compromises authenticity and cultural detailing. Others, however, urged people not to over-criticise the project, calling it a bold step towards larger AI-driven productions in Indian entertainment.

The main concern circulating online is whether AI-generated storytelling will dilute the essence of traditional mythological narratives. While some fear it might, others are curious to see how India’s first large-scale AI series unfolds.

Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh will stream on JioHotstar and Waves OTT from October 25 and on Star Plus from October 26. As the series premieres, all eyes are on how audiences and critics respond to this ambitious and controversial experiment.
