Netflix Maharaj

Gujarat High Court has given a big relief to Netflix as it has allowed the streaming of its Film Maharaj. This comes just the day after the court extended the stay on the film for one more day. The petitioners filed for a stay on the release of movie which was allowed as it allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

The film is based on an 1862 court case between a social reformer and a vaishnavite leader. It is alleged that the movie paints Hindus in a bad light and also makes blasphemous comments on Lord Krishna.

Today Justice Sangeeta K Vishen came to the conclusion that the film is based on historical events that led to the case and it does not target religious sentiments. Netflix had argued in this case that the court cannot erase or censor legal history even if it was of pre-independence period.

The interesting thing here is that the film never released any trailer or teaser and the petitioners were offended just by the posters and the premise of the plot. This can be seen as a big win for the OTT industry which has been under constant attacks from religious groups and ‘culture saviours’.
