New OTTs Launched: Is There Space To Survive?

Hello Meghalaya.

Many OTT platforms are struggling with low subscriber counts and significant financial losses. Despite offering high-quality content, several have had to merge with larger platforms to survive.

The main issue is affordability; most people cannot subscribe to multiple OTT services. In a country like India, where disposable income is limited, subscribing to numerous platforms is not feasible for the average consumer.

Even with the dominance of big players like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, new video-streaming platforms continue to emerge, offering content in specific regional languages or catering to niche themes.

For instance, Vibhu Agarwal, the founder of Ullu, recently launched a mythological OTT service called Hari Om. The Navrattan Group, a Mumbai-based company, plans a new service targeting family audiences with movies.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a streaming platform for Kannada films, while Meghalaya launched a state-specific platform called Hello Meghalaya.

Industry experts are divided on the viability of these niche platforms. Some see them as a way to serve audiences with specialized content, while others highlight the challenges of scaling and economic sustainability.

Experts believe niche platforms can attract unique audiences by offering content that mainstream services neglect. Strategic pricing, flexible subscription models, and partnerships with local content creators are essential for attracting and retaining subscribers.

Vibhu Agarwal of Hari Om notes a lack of dedicated mythological apps that combine animated features for children with astrological services and pujas. His platform aims to be a one-stop solution, ensuring a family-friendly environment without directly competing with rivals.

While regional and niche OTT platforms have potential, the overall growth of advertising and subscriptions in India is slowing, making it difficult for new players to establish themselves.

Though niche platforms may not achieve significant scale or profitability, they might attract larger players for acquisition if they build a substantial subscriber base.

Ultimately, the future may see more consolidation in the OTT market, with successful niche platforms merging with or being acquired by larger services to enhance their content offerings and reach.
