NGO Calls For OTT Ban: Will It Save India?

NGO Calls For OTT Ban

India prides itself on its rich cultural heritage and values, but recent incidents involving OTT platforms have sparked nationwide debate.

These platforms, while offering a vast array of entertainment, also present challenges when content contradicts traditional values or exposes young audiences to explicit and sexual content.

Recently two young children in Mumbai, while their parents worked, were discovered watching explicit content on their mobile phones. They were sleeping naked on each other when they were discovered. This shocked their parents and underscored the risks associated with unregulated media consumption.

The accessibility of such content poses a persistent threat, especially in households where parents are absent due to work obligations.

Uday Mahurkar’s NGO called for a ban on popular OTT platforms and social networking sites, alleging they broadcast sexually explicit content.

His Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation, associated with the infamous GemsOfBollywood, urged the Digital India Bill to ban sexually perverted content and proposed an Ethics Law for media platforms.

Mahurkar criticized OTT platforms for exposing children to inappropriate material and deemed current IT Rules ineffective. He suggested penalties for content providers failing to control such content under the Digital India Bill.

However, critics argue that bans may not address the root issues. They emphasize empowering parents with better tools for managing digital media, educating children about safe online practices, and ensuring platforms take responsibility for their content.

The effectiveness of bans is questionable, noting that determined youth may still find ways to access objectionable material through other means.

Instead, advocating for comprehensive strategies that include stronger parental oversight, community education initiatives, and improved content regulation is the route forward.

The OTT ban might not be a practical and ideal solution to save the culture of India.
