OTT’s Biggest Show: Sex, Drama, & Grandeur

Heeramandi Trailer

Bollywood’s legendary director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is making his debut on OTT with the larger-than-life web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The series is set to start streaming on Netflix on May 1.

Bhansali returns to his favorite genre of exploring the lives of prostitutes with Heeramandi, following his previous works like Devdas, Saawariya, and Gangubai Kathiawadi. The trailer hints at the series being typical of Bhansali’s style, featuring larger-than-life sets and grandeur.

The show delves into the lives of the courtesans of Lahore’s red-light area during India’s fight for independence from British rule, drawing inspiration from real-life incidents.

The content appears hard-hitting, with spectacular production design and razor-sharp, poetic dialogues, though some may find them too filmy or cheesy for today’s taste. Additionally, there are some sexy and raunchy dialogues, fitting for the characters portrayed as prostitutes.

The casting and their performances are quite mixed. It’s a pleasant surprise to see Fardeen Khan, Manisha Koirala, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyanan Suman after a long hiatus, but their performances seem over-the-top and gaudy. Sonakshi Sinha and Aditi Rao Hydari leave an impressive mark in the trailer.

In contrast to other web series, this show will also feature songs and dances.

Touted as the biggest show from India on OTT platforms, anticipation for “Heeramandi” has been building among the audience for three years.

Now, whether it lives up to audience expectations, whether Bhansali can showcase his prowess on OTT platforms after captivating theater audiences for decades, and whether it can boost Netflix’s subscriber base remains to be seen.
